The Death of Ivan Ilyich by Leo Tolstoy

The Death of Ivan Ilyich by Leo Tolstoy

I read The Death of Ivan Ilyich by Leo Tolstoy for school and I like it more then I thought I would. It is about the life of Ivan Ilyich as a lawyer who works for the government in Russia and his goal of climbing the social ladder. We know that he is dead from the title of the book and the book starts out with his funeral. It is also commenting on the herd mentality, how the elite are alienated from each other, and mainly how they ignore death. Ideas from philosophers like Nietzche and Sartre also show up in the book. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a quick read (It is just over 100 pages) that gives you a lot to think about. Although I would recommend reading it in school or with a book club because it is fun to discuss.
