Empire of Storms (Throne of Glass #5) by Sarah J. Maas

Empire of Storms (Throne of Glass #5) by Sarah J. Maas

I started off really excited for this book and hoping that it would not be the last in the series. At the same time I felt conflicted about reading it because I was afraid it would be tarnished as the story had been stretched really thin. It started off in the typical fashion of this series, great, action filled and a surprise around every corner. There was just this little thing nagging at me until I got to the middle. That is when I realize what it was. This book is no longer for middle schoolers. The series started off appropriate for seventh and eighth graders (maybe a hardy sixth grader), but due to the language and the sexual scenes in the book, I have to say that it is now only for high school students. This really disappointed me as I did not mind the romance and it had all been handled appropriately in the other books, but this one just took it too far. It took it farther than any of the other books in the series had and it just made it less interesting to read. I realize that Sarah J Maas’ writing has evolved over time and she is currently also writing another romance series, but I am sad to say that it has leaked over into this series. Another thing that really grated at my nerves is the use of curse words. Before they had been used infrequently to have the characters express anger, but more and more throughout the book they are being employed in a derogatory insulting way, especially towards the women characters. This was not helped along by the submissive behavior that was also shown throughout. One of the things that I had previously liked about these books and this series is the strong female characters who were not afraid of anything or anyone, but as soon as a romantic interest comes in, I see them acting submissively and fragile. This really disappointed me throughout the book. I came for the same action packed (violence loving) characters that I had seen throughout the previous series but in this book I found characters that were more befitting for a romance novel. The plot and the story are still good with tons of surprises, but I was just not into the book like I used to be due to the unneeded lustful scenes.
