This Is Where It Ends by Marieke Nijkamp

This is a really good book to read with some of the current events that continue to happen, such as the school shootings. They seem to happen more and more and an important thing to do is talk about them. This book creates an easy way to start that conversation as it spans 54 minutes which a school goes from a typical assembly to a nightmare. In this book you follow a few characters that are close or related to the shooter in some shape or form. They show how no one can really know what causes the shooting, as well as showing not to blame people close to the shooter. I found it to be fast paced and engaging the whole time, although the character development was a little lacking. Towards the beginning it was also difficult to keep track of the different characters as the book was jumping around so much. Overall I would recommend it to middle and high school students, but I would warn that there is rape (off page) and other things that require a person to be able to be mature. Although it is a difficult topic, it is really good and I found that it was really able to make me understand the severity of school shootings as well as how they affect everyone.
