The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

I had been hearing a lot of talk about this book, especially with the current political atmosphere going on, so I decided to finally pick it up and read it. The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood is very sad. It tells the story of a normal woman and how she ended up as a handmaid in a powerful man’s house. A handmaid is a young woman who will get pregnant and carry a child for a couple since the wife is too old to have children. The main character is just an ordinary woman, and this book shows how ordinary people are made to go along with radical and horrible things, how rights are taken away, and what can happen if people are too afraid to speak up. It was also sad because it showed how the system works, with fear and with oppression, how easy it is to oppress people and take away their rights working within the system. I think that this should be a book that everyone reads so that everyone can understand how easily our rights can be taken away, but it should be read by high schoolers and up.
