This is the best and most relevant book that I have read in a long time. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is about Starr, she witnesses her best friend getting murdered by the police and her life is suddenly changed. She now has to face what it means to stand up for her friends and sometimes to her friends, as well as learning to be proud of who she is. This is a must read for everyone. I wish I was able to read this book again for the first time, it taught me so much and it kept repeating it’s message again and again making sure that it stuck and so that every time I might have forgotten the point it showed me again. This is a book that needs to be in classrooms everywhere and it needs to be discussed. Everyone knows about racism but Angie Thomas explains the more hidden aspects of it, that white people often don’t understand, as well as addressing the issue of police brutality and all the wrongful murders of black people around the country.
