History is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera

History is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera is a book about loss and betrayal. Griffin is grieving the death of Theo, his former boyfriend and best friend. To cope with his grief about Theo’s death Griffin still talks to him, he wants Theo’s approval for the way that he lives his life and forgiveness for the way that Griffin treated Theo before he died. Griffin doesn’t know how to feel about Theo’s death because they weren’t together, Theo even had a new boyfriend, but Griffin still loved him and wanted to be with him. Griffin also meets Jackson, Theo’s current boyfriend, and they end up understanding each other better then anyone else at the time, because they both grieve Theo in the same way. So they try to help each other through their grief. But Griffin also has OCD and with his compulsions getting even stronger then before, he now has to face them without the help of his best friends Theo and Wade who he isn’t talking to anymore. This is a book about heartbreak and grief and what it means to move on. This book was really slow to start, it alternated between flashbacks and present day telling about Theo’s and Griffin’s past and how Griffin is dealing with the grief presently which was a cool way of learning what went on, but it took a while to get to the end point. One thing that I really liked about this book is that it didn’t make a big deal about being gay. The main character just happened to be gay and just happened to have a boyfriend like it is just a typical thing (treating them as if they are a heterosexual couple) which I thought was really cool because I haven’t read a book like that yet. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a heartfelt read about overcoming loss and heartbreak although it is definitely for high schoolers and older.
