MACI AND ZOE:
How did you get started writing?

JODI:
Around the time that High School Musical was really popular, I had an idea for a TV movie/musical. I was talking about it with my husband and he was the one who made me think about writing it as a book. I’ve learned a lot about writing since that first book (which I never published). I think it really helped being part of a writers group where we met regularly to read and give each other feedback on our writing.

MACI AND ZOE:
How long does it take you to write a book?

JODI:
My books tend to be on the shorter side. I think I’ve written a first draft in a few months, but that’s just the first draft. Revising can take a long time. I think that’s the harder part, but it really makes the story better.

MACI AND ZOE:
What was the first story/book you wrote? Was it any good, what was it about?
The first story I remember writing when I was in elementary school was about a brother and sister chosen to save a planet that was under the tyranny of a new king. It’s interesting that my first story was science fiction because I don’t tend to write science fiction now.

MACI AND ZOE:
What gave you the idea for the book Let’s Face It?

JODI:
One of my favorite movies when I was in middle school was The Secret of My Success starring Michael J. Fox. It’s about a guy who moves to New York City and gets a job delivering mail at a big company, but he has dreams of doing more and finds a way to make it happen. I think that’s partly what inspired my first few books about girls getting summer jobs and going after their dreams. My most recent book, Dallas Lalone: In Our Words, is about an aspiring singer going after his dreams and how his fans come together to support him and each other. The story is inspired by the fans of a popular singer.

MACI AND ZOE:
What’s your favorite dessert?

JODI:
Lately, I’d have to say it’s the Strawberry Shortcake at Cheesecake Factory. I would’ve never thought to order strawberry shortcake at a restaurant known for cheesecake, but my cousin ordered it once and it was delicious. I also love anything with gooey chocolate.
