Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds

Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds

Jason Reynolds is one of my favorite author’s so I was super excited to read Long Way Down. And it was even better than I thought it would be. This book is about Will and his brother, Shawn, who was just murdered. This story takes place within the two minutes of Will taking the elevator in his building down to go kill the guy who killed his brother. But on each floor people from his past get on the elevator and share their story. I read this book in one sitting and as soon as I was finished I made my sister and mom read it since I needed someone to discuss it with right away. The prose is beautiful and incredibly smart, I wish I had time to write an analysis on some of the poems as just stand-alone ones as well as have time to do a deep analysis of the book. It brings up many topics like the cycle of violence that happens as well as manhood, and the unspoken rules that exist in certain places. This is a must-read book.
