Look Who’s Back by Timur Vermes

Look Who’s Back by Timur Vermes

When I first saw this book, my first reaction was, “Is that Hitler?” on the front cover of the book. Indeed it was, and that is one of the main reasons that I picked it up and ultimately decided to read it. I am a fan of all things World War II and so when there is a book bringing this historical figure into a modern context, I was interested to see how it went. In this book, Hitler wakes up in an empty lot in Germany in 2011. He has no idea how or where, he just went with it, assuming everyone knew who he was, he started back with his speeches. That was an understatement with everyone recognizing him, but unsure how to react. But once he started speaking, they were sure, of course he was doing satire. This is how Hitler rose to power on Youtube and other social media sources. I have to say, this is the first satirical book that I have read. I knew going in that it was not my typical type of book, but I was really interested in it because of it having a historical figure such as Hitler as well as being a commentary on some current things, such as the presidential election. I found this book to be interesting but slow. It was a different perspective, reading it from Hitler’s point of view and seeing how fast things can become warped. I would recommend this to anyone interested in World War II because even though it does not take place in history, it is a really neat synthesis of history and modern day. One big question that it brought up for me is, would I laugh when Hitler says these things or believe it?
