Love, Hate & Other Filters by Samira Ahmed

Love, Hate & Other Filters by Samira Ahmed

Love, Hate and Other Filters by Samira Ahmed is about a Muslim Indian American girl. Maya just wants to be a normal girl in her all white small town, maybe have a boyfriend, as well as go to NYU in the fall to study film. But after a terrorist attack some of the people in her school start to feel differently about her. This book was fun to read and pretty light hearted despite dealing with a tough topic. It also had a splash of romance, usually I don’t like romance but it worked here. This book did an especially good job of looking at how the islamophobia affects a Muslim teens everyday life, and how her parents started to treat her different accordingly. I think that this is a must read book and would recommend it to 7th graders and up (it occasionally brings up sex).
