Marissa Meyer

Marissa Meyer is the New York Times-bestselling author of The Lunar Chronicles. She lives in Tacoma, Washington, with her husband and three demanding cats. She’s a fan of most things geeky (Sailor Moon, Firefly, any occasion that requires a costume), and has been in love with fairy tales since she was a child. She may or may not be a cyborg. We we able to ask her a few questions.

MACI & ZOE:
Do you read books on an electronic device or a real book?

MARISSA MEYER:
Both! If I’m relaxing at home I prefer a physical paper book. I like to “measure” how far I’ve come in the book and how far I have still to go, and I’m always flipping back to look at the front cover when the art is beautiful. But I also travel a lot, and for that, e-books can’t be beat. I can never just pack one book in my suitcase, and my Nook allows me to pack as many as I want!

MACI & ZOE:
What do you use as a bookmark?

MARISSA MEYER:
I have a handful of bookmarks that I’ve mostly collected on book tour – from other authors or bookstores or libraries. And I always have plenty of my own Lunar chronicles bookmarks lying around, too.

MACI & ZOE:
What is your favorite dessert?

MARISSA MEYER:
ALL OF THEM. Ha! But if I had to choose just one… gosh. Probably cheesecake. With chocolate. Or anything with peanut butter. I’m also a big fan of lemon bars and lemon tarts. And cookies.

Mostly, I just really, really love dessert.

MACI & ZOE:
Do you have a special procedure that you do when you write?

MARISSA MEYER:
I try not to get in the habit of having too many “rituals” – because I don’t want to get to a place where I feel like I CAN’T write if I don’t have, say, my lucky pen, or I haven’t done twenty minutes of meditation, or whatever. Mostly I just get myself a glass of water, put on some socks, sit down, and try to get to work. That said, if I’m having trouble concentrating for some reason, I might lay on the floor and try to daydream about the next scene for a while. Or take a quick walk or do some speedy house chores to clear my head.

MACI & ZOE:
Where did you get the idea for the Lunar Chronicles and did it turn out how you intended?

MARISSA MEYER:
I got the idea for these books many years ago when I entered a writing contest in which the host had listed about ten random prompts and writers had to choose two of them to include in their stories. My two prompts: set it in the future and include a fairy-tale character. My contest entry was a sci-fi version of Puss in Boots and I had so much fun writing it that I thought I would try to do an entire series of sci-fi fairy tales!

As far as whether or not they turned out how I intended… that’s an excellent question! I don’t think any author is ever entirely happy with their work – there are always things we’d want to go back and change. But for the most part, but I feel like I was able to capture a lot of the friendships and shenanigans and the… epicness, I guess, that I was striving for. Of course, readers will have the final say on that!
