MACI AND ZOE:

What’s your favorite genre?

MR. M:

When I was in middle school I got hooked on some amazing authors like J.D. Salinger and S.E. Hinton. So I guess my favorite genre would be young adult fiction. However, I think it’s important for readers to expose themselves to different genres. As an elementary school teacher I am always trying to encourage my students to try other genres.

MACI AND ZOE:

Do you read books on an electronic device or a real book?

MR. M:

When I read independently I use my Kindle Fire. When I am reading out loud to my class I read from books. I just finished reading my students Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. I also read my students newspaper articles and blogs. I want to expose them to different forms of writing.

MACI AND ZOE:

How did you get started writing?

MR. M:

Before I fell in love with teaching, I attended undergrad at Chapman University. I was a film major. During this time I took a lot of screenwriting courses. After Chapman I attended the American Film Institute as a screenwriting fellow. As much as I loved screenwriting, I did not find my writing voice. I kept tampering with other genres and eventually became a television executive. I helped shape comedies and dramas for television. After leaving the entertainment business I became an educator. My goal is to always bring creativity into the classroom. Whether we are building machines, or writing personal narratives, I still find ways to be creative. The Magical Adventures of Brian Leonard is my first novel.

MACI AND ZOE:

What books are you reading right now?

MR. M:

I love The Maze Runner! It is fantastic.

MACI AND ZOE:

How many books do you read a year?

MR. M:

I have no idea how many books I read a year. I typically flip flop between a young adult book and a nonfiction book about education.

MACI AND ZOE:

What’s your favorite dessert?

MR. M:

My favorite dessert of all time exists on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is called the Ovaltine Froth. It is basically a chocolate milkshake. The first time I tasted it was at the Mauna Kea Hotel. My wife and I once tried to make it when we were living in Santa Monica. It tastes better in Hawaii.  I think it tasted better in Hawaii! Then again, everything tastes better in Hawaii.

MACI AND ZOE:

How long does it take you to write a book?

MR. M:

I typically write more than one story at a time. I am not sure when I will officially publish my next book. However, I am planning on writing a lot during my winter break.

MACI AND ZOE:

What are you working on now?

MR. M:

I am currently writing the sequel to Brian Leonard. I also wrote a short story. As a teacher, I love promoting activities that teach students how to be respectful. I would like to write a book about this topic as well.

MACI AND ZOE:

Do you ever miss the characters you write about? What characters do you miss the most and Why?

MR. M:

I love my characters. Brian Leonard was exciting to write. I try and make sure my characters have very specific voices. One of my favorite characters to write was Johnny. He always provided a little bit of humor.

MACI AND ZOE:

Do you have a special procedure that you do when you write?

MR. M:

I always try and do a lot of pre-writing. For me, this means I focus on writing one character at a time. Once I feel like I understand who the character is, I write an outline of the story. I wish I could just sit down and start typing, but I have to plan it out.
