The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosiński

The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosiński

I read this for school, and I do not think that there is any other reason to read this book. It is not that it is a bad book, but it is so deeply disturbing, it is not something that should be read alone or for no purpose, because the truths and imagery that is revealed and shown are hard to forget. There is no way around the violence and harsh facts of this book because it is a book about the treatment of the Other. And I would not want a book to sugarcoat it, so it must be present. That does not stop it from being difficult to read. In this book a boy travels from village to village while hiding from the Nazi’s during World War II. With each chapter a new misfortune befalls this boy until he is the one causing the misfortune. This book is a powerful commentary on the effect of treating someone like the other. When reading it, there were lots of scenes that really forced me to think and confront myself in wondering whether or not I am a Painted Bird or a Bird Painter.
