The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

I read The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo in a few hours, and it was amazing. I loved Xiomara and how we got to watch her develop her voice. This book talks about love, acceptance, and poetry as well as being fiercely feminist. I could not put this book down and wished that I had a group to read it with, as well as maybe read it aloud because it is written in prose. I also thought it was important that it sometimes would have lines written in Spanish, which were not later translated like some books have. I do not speak Spanish (despite taking a few years of Spanish at school) and so did not understand it. But this did not take away from the experience reading it, I still loved it. I know that I am not it’s intended audience (as a white person), but it was still a fantastic read and one I would recommend for everyone.
