The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

I started this book as an audiobook on a trip to Las Vegas. But the miles ran out and there was still chapters left, so I transferred to reading it on my kindle. I am glad I did not have to wait long, because this book is fast paced and exciting. Puck is content in her life and just wants to spend the days with her island horse, Dove. Sean loves horse, the thoroughbreds and the water horses. Their paths cross when Puck ends up entering herself in the annual Scorpio Races. The Scorpio races occur every year in November where the savage water horses race along the beach. Sean is a veteran of them and has seen his share of death. Puck on the other hand is not ready for the brutality of it all, but sees no way out of completing the race. Once again Maggie Stiefvater creates wonderful characters that I could not help rooting for. Another aspect to love about this book is the way that Maggie Stiefvater subtly shows what resistance looks like. When Puck is the first girl to enter into the races, the men try to stop her and so she pushes back. She sees no reason why not and the men do not have a good excuse. Everything about this book is fast paced (just like the horses) and it really draws the reader into their world. Even though I am not someone who loves horses, the writing and the characters still made me fall in love with Dove and the other horses. This book will make anyone able to appreciate the majesty and beauty of a horse. As always with Maggie Stiefvater, everything is original and refreshing to read about.
