Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo is about a girl named Alina who is just trying to survive. Her country is at war but can’t properly defend itself as a result of the Fold, a dark no-man’s land that cuts the country in two. Most who go in don’t come back out. It was created by the most powerful evil Grisha, people with powers, and cannot be destroyed. Alina was conscripted into the army like most other youth, and she went in with her best friend Mal, who grew up with her at the orphanage. Mal and Alina’s units have to go into the Fold and Alina is terrified. When they go in life changes for them but not how they expected it too. I enjoyed reading it and the world they lived in, but I didn’t feel like the characters developed very well. I would recommend this book to anyone who liked Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard or Throne of Glass by Sarah Maas.
