Sharon Draper

We had the opportunity to interview Sharon Draper in person. Below are her responses to the questions we asked her.

MACI & ZOE:
What is your favorite desert?

SHARON DRAPER:
Vanilla ice cream with carmel, but not all ice cream is equal. The vanilla ice cream has to be made with real vanilla beans.

MACI & ZOE:
What is your favorite bookstore?

SHARON DRAPER:
My favorite type of bookstores are the small independent books stores. They are called indies. They are all fading, save the indies! I like the small bookstores that you can walk into, meet the owner, get suggestions and then go and read the book in the store. The bookstores that are owned by mom and pop and  have actually read the books. Not the big box stores as I call them.

MACI & ZOE:
Do you ever miss the characters after you finish the book?

SHARON DRAPER:
Yes, because they become like family and you live with them. You know what their kitchen smells like and then when you finish a book, they are gone.

MACI & ZOE:
What do you use as bookmarks?

SHARON DRAPER:
If I am on an airplane the little napkin or a boarding pass. If I am at home it is probably whatever is handy. I do have nice bookmarks, but I do not like to use them because I lose my bookmarks and I do not want to mess them up.

MACI & ZOE:
Do you like electronic or real books?

SHARON DRAPER:
Real books. It is awkward to read with ebooks. Although I do read books on my iPad when I am on an airplane, for the weight. My first ebook was 800 pages.

MACI & ZOE:
What do you like most about being an author?

SHARON DRAPER:
I like talking to young people. I also like the traveling and getting to go to cool places. I have been to China, Japan, Ghana, Kenya, Russia and London.

MACI & ZOE:
What are some of your favorite books?

SHARON DRAPER:
I don’t have any. I read so many books that I can not pick one. The last good book I read was an adult book. I like it when the book uses words well.

MACI & ZOE:
When you write do you have any rituals you need to do before you start writing? Do you write on a computer or with a paper and a pen?

SHARON DRAPER:
I use a computer. I sit in front of my big computer in my big raggedy yellow chair. This chair is a really big comfortable chair. If they took my chair away I do not know if I would be able to write anymore. When I write I sit in my room all by myself and it has to be silent. There can not even be a fan going. I like to start writing at around 4 in the morning.

MACI & ZOE:
How much do you write a day?

SHARON DRAPER:
On a good day I can write three or four chapters. Sometimes even four to five, but that is my max. A lot of the day is revision.

MACI & ZOE:
Do you know the whole story when you write or do you come up with it as you go?

SHARON DRAPER:
I don’t know the whole story. Sometimes I think I know where it will go but it will  change.

MACI & ZOE:
Is there anything else you want to add?

SHARON DRAPER:
I don’t eat pickles and I don’t like peppers. I collect apples. I collect apples because when I got the teacher of the year award I got a crystal apple from the president. After that people started to give them to me. I also collect nutcrackers. I collect nutcrackers because my daughter is a dancer. She would dance in the nutcracker every year and we would get a nutcracker every year. After that people started to give them to me.
