Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

I read Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli since the movie based on the book, Love, Simon, is coming out soon and I wanted to read the book before seeing the movie. This book is about Simon and his secret email correspondence with another boy at his school who uses the name Blue. Simon is gay and has not come out yet, but dreams of the time when he can meet his secret friend in real life. And that they don’t have to keep it a secret that they are both gay. But one day someone finds the email and blackmails Simon, saying if he doesn’t do as he says, he will tell the whole school that Simon is gay. Simon has to figure out what to do and it really makes him think about what it would be like to come out when he lives in Georgia. I am not a usual fan of books that are based on romance, but I liked this one. It was a romance. but it was more about Simon’s identity and thinking about coming out, what it means for him personally, and brings up good questions like ‘why is straight the default?’. Simon never questioned that he was gay, the question was just when he would come out (since he wanted to do this on his terms). This book also explored the idea of identity and the way that it feels like something is changing, like coming out, but that Simon is still Simon and will always be Simon.
