The Slave Dancer by Paula Fox

The Slave Dancer by Paula Fox

After several years this book has still stolen my attention and heart. It constantly pops back into my head and it is always relevant. The specific form of slavery that is shown in this book might be gone, but the oppression is still present for many in our society. In this book, Jessie is kidnapped and forced to play music for the slaves being transported on a ship. He is forced to witness the brutality against the slaves and the inhumanity of which the sailors treat them. This is very powerful writing and it is captivating to read. This book has really stood out to me among other historical fiction books about slavery due to power of the story and Jessie’s specific experiences.
